Braces FAQs

In the first couple of days of having your braces put on, you’ll want to stick to eating soft food and staying away from crunchy foods like raw vegetables or crusty breads. We also advise that you avoid any meat that would require extensive chewing.

After the first few days have passed, you’ll be able to resume eating more normally. However, there are certain foods you’ll need to avoid the whole time you have your braces on. These foods to avoid include extremely chewy foods such as taffy or licorice, hard foods such as nuts, foods you bite into such as apple or corn on the cob, and crunchy foods such as ice or popcorn.

Your mouth may feel sore for the first few days of wearing your new braces, which is completely normal! Something that can help ease the soreness is rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. We recommend dissolving one teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water and swishing this mixture in your mouth. Taking painkillers such as Advil or ibuprofen can also help ease any pain or discomfort you may experience. If your new braces are irritating your tongue, lips, or cheeks, you can use wax to minimize this problem until your mouth becomes accustomed to your braces.

Yes! It is completely normal for your teeth to feel loose when you first get your braces put on. During this phase, your teeth are actually loosening before they move into place. Once your teeth are positioned correctly, your teeth will no longer feel loose.

Having a loose band or wire is something that can happen from time to time when you have braces. If a wire is poking you and making things uncomfortable, you can use something blunt, like a pencil eraser, to gently push the protruding wire underneath the arch wire. If the wire continues to bother you, you can use wax or wet cotton to minimize the discomfort. If nothing else helps, you can always use a fingernail clipper to snip the wire behind the last spot it is securely fastened.

If you’re struggling with a loose band or wire, make sure to contact our office to set up an appointment so we can check that everything is properly in place.

Orthodontic FAQs

At Akridge Orthodontics, we typically recommend that a child’s first visit to the orthodontist should occur around 10 years old.

To find out whether or not your child needs braces or other orthodontic treatment, you can set up a free initial appointment with us by filling out our Consultation Form HERE. You can also learn more about what to expect during your initial visit on our What To Expect page!

At Akridge Orthodontics, we treat all ages!! If you’re in need of orthodontic care, we’ve got you covered.

The length of an orthodontic treatment is dependent upon each individual’s needs and goals. The timeline that works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. That’s why Dr. Matt and the Akridge team take their time to develop a personalized treatment plan that is made just for you, giving you the best result possible!

Once you’ve started your treatment, appointments typically take place about every four to six weeks.

We strive to make our orthodontic services as affordable and accessible as possible! That’s why we offer payments without charging for financing.

No referral is needed from your dentist to visit an orthodontist; however, we do recommend keeping up with regular check ups with your or your child’s dentist.

If you just finished your braces treatment, you will need to wear a retainer once the braces come off. Retainers will be made at the de-band appointment and should be worn for about a year with final recommendations at the last appointment.
